Avoiding Rejection: A Guide to the Nevada Power of Attorney Apostille Process

Rules for Power of Attorney

  • Eligible documents for apostille/authentication in Nevada

Nevada will apostille or certify original or certified-copy documents including Powers of Attorney, vital records, court documents, business records, or any document notarized by a Nevada-commissioned notary public.

  • Notarization required for private documents

If the POA is a private or personal document, it must first be notarized by a Nevada notary — the SOS will only authenticate the notarized document.

  • Originals or certified copies only — no regular photocopies/scans

The submitted document must be the original or a certified copy; plain photocopies or scans will be rejected for apostille/authentication.

  • Apostille / Certification fee per document

The standard fee is $20 per apostille or authentication, payable to Nevada Secretary of State.

  • Expedited service available for faster processing

Optional expedited services exist (e.g. 24-hour, 4-hour, 2-hour, 1-hour) at additional cost if quicker apostille processing is needed.

  • Submission must include official request form and destination country

You must complete the official Apostille/Certification Order Form, list the destination country, provide return address or shipping label, and submit payment along with the document.

  • Documents can be submitted by mail or in person (Carson City or Las Vegas office)

You may mail your request to Carson City or drop off at the Las Vegas office dropbox or counter per SOS instructions.
