Avoiding Rejection: A Guide to the New Jersey Marriage Certificate Apostille Process
Rules for Marriage Certificate
Certified Document
You must submit an original certified copy issued by the New Jersey State Registrar (State Vital Records) or a Local Registrar (typically the municipality where the license was issued). It must have the original signature of the State Registrar or Local Registrar.
County Clerk Certification (Critical Step)
Before sending it to the state, the certified marriage certificate must be taken to the County Clerk's office in the same county where the marriage was registered. The County Clerk will affix their seal and complete a certification to verify the signature of the State or Local Registrar. Rejection Cause: Sending the document without this county certification. The state apostilles the County Clerk's signature, not the Registrar's signature directly.
Complete Cover Sheet
You must include a completed "Apostille/Certification Cover Sheet" which acts as your cover sheet. This form is available on the New Jersey Department of Treasury's website and is mandatory.
Correct Payment
Include a $25.00 per apostille fee. Payment must be made by check or money order payable to "Treasurer, State of New Jersey." Cash is not accepted for mail-in requests.
Pre-Paid Return Shipping
You must include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with sufficient postage. Using a trackable service like USPS Priority Mail or FedEx is highly recommended.
