Avoiding Rejection: A Guide to the Washington DC Marriage Certificate Apostille Process

Marriage Certificate must be the CERTIFIED copy issued by the DC Superior Court with the triple seal

Rules for Marriage Certificate

  • Certified Document

You must submit an original certified copy issued by the D.C. Department of Health (Vital Records Division). It must have the original signature of the D.C. Registrar and the raised or stamped seal of the Vital Records Division.

  • Notarization is REQUIRED (Critical Step)

This is D.C.'s key requirement. The certified marriage certificate must be notarized by a Washington, D.C. Notary Public before you send it to the Secretary of the District of Columbia. The notary must affix their seal and complete their notarial certificate. Rejection Cause: Sending the document without this notarization. The office apostilles the notary's signature, not the D.C. Registrar's signature directly.

  • Complete Cover Sheet

You must include a completed "Document Authentication Request Form" which acts as your cover sheet. This form is available on the D.C. Secretary's website and is mandatory.

  • Correct Payment

Include a $15.00 per apostille fee, plus a $2.00 processing fee per document (total $17.00 per document). Payment must be made by check or money order payable to "D.C. Treasurer."

  • Pre-Paid Return Shipping

You must include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with sufficient postage. Using a trackable service like USPS Priority Mail is highly recommended.
