Avoiding Rejection: A Guide to the California Marriage Certificate Apostille Process
Rules for Marriage Certificate
Certified Document
You must submit an original certified copy issued by a California County Recorder or the California State Vital Records office. It must have a legible original signature of the county/state official and a raised, impressed, or stamped seal. Photocopies are rejected.
County Clerk Authentication (Critical Step)
Before sending it to the state, the certified marriage certificate must be taken to the County Clerk's office in the same county that issued it. The County Clerk will attach a "Certificate of Acknowledgment" to verify the signature of the County Recorder or other official. The state will not apostille the document without this county certification.
Complete Cover Sheet
You must include a completed "Authentication Request Form" which acts as your cover sheet. This form provides your contact and return information and is mandatory.
Correct Payment
Include the $20.00 per apostille fee. Payment must be made by check or money order payable to "Secretary of State." Cash is not accepted for mail-in requests.
Pre-Paid Return Shipping
You must include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with sufficient postage. Using USPS Priority Mail with tracking or another traceable service is highly recommended.
