Rules for Divorce Decree
Document Must Be Certified and Signed by the Correct Court Official
The California Secretary of State can only apostille a document signed by a specific California official. For a Divorce Decree, the signature must be from the Clerk, Assistant Clerk, or Deputy Clerk of the Superior Court where the divorce was granted. The document must be a certified copy with the court's seal. A judge's signature is not acceptable.
The Signature Must Be Original and Verifiable
The official's signature on the document must be an original ink signature. The CA SOS will not accept documents with stamped, electronic, or photocopied signatures. They verify the signature against their own records.
Complete the Apostille Request Form
You must include a fully completed "Apostille or Certification Request Form" with your submission. This form is mandatory and provides critical instructions and contact information.
Include Correct Payment
The fee is $20.00 per apostille. Payment must be by check or money order payable to the "California Secretary of State." Cash is not accepted.
